Interior and Exterior Painting With the Prep Work Done Right

Fresh paint is the fastest way to change how a room or a whole house feels. We handle the scraping, patching, caulking and priming that make a paint job last, then finish with clean lines you will notice every day.

  • Interior rooms, exteriors and cabinets
  • Thorough surface prep before any color goes on
  • Help choosing colors and sheens

What we paint

Our painting crew works inside and outside homes throughout Knoxville and the surrounding area. Most projects fall into one of four groups, and many combine two or three.

Interior walls and ceilings

Single accent walls, whole rooms, stairwells and open floor plans. Ceilings get their own attention, since flat ceiling paint is what hides roller marks and minor imperfections overhead. If the walls need repair first, we fix holes, cracks and nail pops before any color goes on.

Trim, doors and built-ins

Baseboards, crown molding, window casings, interior doors and stair rails take the most wear in a house. We fill nail holes, caulk the gaps where trim meets the wall, sand glossy surfaces for adhesion, and finish with an enamel that resists scuffs and cleans easily. Switching dated stained trim to a painted finish is one of the more noticeable changes you can make to a room.

Cabinet painting and refinishing

Cabinet painting asks more of the painter than walls do. Doors and drawer fronts come off and hardware is labeled. Every surface is degreased, then scuffed and primed with a bonding primer that grips factory finishes. The final coats are a hard-curing cabinet enamel applied in thin, even layers. Done this way, the finish holds up to daily use in a busy kitchen.

Exterior painting

Siding, trim, fascia, soffits, shutters, porches and front doors. Exterior work is where preparation matters most, because Tennessee summers bring heat, humidity and sun, and winters bring freeze and thaw. Paint only performs as well as the surface underneath it.

Prep is most of the job

Ask any experienced painter where a paint job succeeds or fails, and the answer is almost always the prep. Here is what that looks like on our projects:

  • Protecting the space. Floors, furniture, fixtures and landscaping are covered. Outlet covers and switch plates are removed and put back afterward.
  • Cleaning. Grease in kitchens, mildew on exteriors and chalky residue on old paint all keep new paint from bonding. They are washed off first.
  • Scraping and sanding. Loose and flaking paint is removed down to a sound edge, and glossy surfaces are scuffed so the next coat has something to hold.
  • Repairing. Holes and dents are filled, cracks are addressed, and on exteriors any soft or rotted wood is pointed out so it can be replaced rather than painted over.
  • Caulking. Gaps at trim, corners and around windows are sealed with a paintable caulk, which gives crisp lines inside and keeps water out of joints outside.
  • Priming. Bare wood, patched areas, stains and big color changes get the right primer. A stain-blocking primer stops water marks and smoke residue from bleeding through.

Only then does the finish paint go on, usually in two coats for even color and full coverage.

Choosing paint, color and sheen

Paint quality is not the place to cut corners. Better paints tend to cover more evenly, touch up more cleanly and hold their color longer. Beyond the brand, three choices shape the result:

Color

Colors shift with light. A gray that looks neutral in the store can lean blue in a north-facing room. We will help you narrow choices and strongly suggest sample patches on two or three walls before you decide.

Sheen

Higher sheen means more durability and easier cleaning, but it also highlights every dent and seam. Lower sheen hides flaws but is harder to scrub. Matching sheen to how a room is used is as important as the color itself.

Interior versus exterior formulas

Exterior paints are made to flex with temperature changes and resist UV and moisture. They are not interchangeable with interior paint, and the reverse is true too.

Signs it is time to repaint

Paint wears out gradually, so it is easy to stop seeing the problems. Inside, look for scuffs that no longer wash off, faded walls around sunny windows, and trim with chipped edges. Outside, watch for:

  • Peeling, blistering or cracking paint, especially on the south and west sides that take the most sun
  • A chalky residue that rubs off on your hand
  • Bare wood showing on window sills, fascia boards or porch rails
  • Caulk that has shrunk or pulled away from trim joints
  • Mildew that returns soon after cleaning

Catching exterior failures early is cheaper than replacing the wood that rots behind them.

How to get ready for painters

  • Decide on colors, or at least narrow them down, before the start date.
  • Take down artwork, mirrors, curtains and wall-mounted TVs if you can.
  • Move small furniture, lamps and breakables out of the room.
  • For exterior work, trim back shrubs and branches touching the house and move patio furniture and grills away from the walls.
  • Let us know about pets, so doors can be managed while paint is drying.

Painting alongside other projects

Painting usually comes near the end of a project, which makes it a natural partner for other work. If walls need more than a quick patch, our drywall repair and finishing service gets them ready first. During a kitchen or bathroom remodel, painting is scheduled after cabinets and trim are in and before the final fixtures. If you are also replacing floors, we usually paint before new flooring is installed so the new surface is not exposed to drips. Looking for budget-friendly ways to freshen a room? Our list of affordable renovation ideas starts with paint for good reason.

Painting Services FAQs

Which sheen should I pick for each room?

Flat or matte hides wall imperfections and works well on ceilings and in bedrooms. Eggshell and satin are easier to wipe clean, which suits living areas, hallways and kids' rooms. Semi-gloss stands up to scrubbing and moisture, so it is the usual choice for trim, doors, bathrooms and cabinets.

Can you paint my kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them?

If the cabinet boxes are solid and you are happy with the layout, painting is often a practical way to update the kitchen. Doors and drawer fronts are removed, cleaned of grease, scuffed, primed with a bonding primer and finished with a durable enamel. Badly damaged or peeling laminate cabinets are usually better candidates for replacement.

Why does exterior paint peel?

Peeling usually traces back to moisture getting behind the paint, poor adhesion over a dirty or chalky surface, or a new coat applied over failing old paint. That is why exterior prep focuses on scraping loose paint, cleaning, sealing gaps and priming bare wood before the finish coats.

Will you help me choose colors?

Yes. We can talk through how a color will look in your light, how it works with your floors and trim, and which sheen fits the room. We also recommend testing samples on the wall before committing.

Do I need to move my furniture?

Moving small items, wall hangings and anything fragile ahead of time helps. Larger furniture can be pulled to the center of the room and covered. We will go over exactly what to expect when we walk through the project.
