Home Improvement for Knoxville Homes, Old and New

Knoxville has houses from nearly every era, and each one asks for a different approach. We match the work to the home in front of us.

A city with houses from every era

Drive across Knoxville and you will pass homes with deep front porches and tall ceilings, mid-century brick ranches, split-levels, townhomes and recently built houses on infill lots. Each era came with its own building methods and materials, so a project that is routine in one house can be complicated in another. A good plan starts with understanding what is behind the walls and under the floors of your particular home.

What older Knoxville homes tend to need

Homes closer to downtown and in the city's older neighborhoods often share a few traits.

Plaster walls and ceilings. Plaster holds up well for a long time, but settling and old repairs leave cracks and soft spots. Some walls can be patched and skim coated; others make more sense to replace. Our drywall and plaster-replacement work covers both approaches, and we will tell you which one fits.

Original wood floors. Older hardwood can frequently be repaired and refinished rather than replaced, though boards that have been sanded many times have limits. Where a floor is beyond saving, new hardwood or a wood-look alternative can be matched to the rest of the house.

Layers of paint and trim. Doors, casings and baseboards may carry many coats. Restoring or replacing trim, then repainting, can make a dated room feel finished again. If your home is old enough that earlier coats may contain lead, that changes how surfaces should be prepared, and we will talk it through with you.

Newer houses and condos in the city

Not every Knoxville project involves an old house. In newer homes, the most common requests are about replacing builder-grade finishes: carpet that is wearing out, flat paint that scuffs easily, or a kitchen that works but does not feel like yours. These jobs tend to move faster because walls are straight and systems are current, which leaves more of your budget for the finishes you actually see. Condo and townhome owners should also check their association's rules about work hours, elevator use or exterior changes before a project is scheduled.

Working inside city limits

If your address is within the City of Knoxville, building questions go to the city rather than to Knox County. We explain upfront whether a project is likely to need a permit, and if electrical or plumbing work requires a licensed specialty trade, we say so instead of guessing. Some older streets also have narrow driveways or on-street parking only; we plan staging and debris removal around that so your neighbors are not inconvenienced.

Questions From Knoxville Homeowners

Can you work with plaster walls, or do they have to be replaced?

It depends on their condition. Sound plaster can often be patched and repainted, while badly cracked or loose sections may be better replaced with drywall. We look at the walls and explain the trade-offs before you decide.

My house is inside city limits. Does that change anything?

Building work inside Knoxville falls under the City of Knoxville rather than Knox County. We tell you during the estimate whether your project is likely to need a permit and whether a specialty trade such as an electrician should be involved.

Do you take on small jobs in the city, or only full remodels?

Both. A single room of paint, a few light fixtures or a stretch of damaged drywall is worth a call, and bundling several small items into one visit can make better use of your time.

Is parking or a tight driveway a problem for your crew?

Usually not, but it helps to know in advance. We ask about parking and access when we schedule so we can plan where to stage materials.
